Tour Overview
Trace the dramatic final chapters of World War II in Europe on this immersive journey from Prague to Berlin led by acclaimed historian Saul David, PhD. The Educational Travel Program has previously offered a similar itinerary as part of an Elbe River cruise. This all-new land-based itinerary allows for deeper exploration and more meaningful time at the sites that defined the war’s final phase.
Starting in Prague, examine the Nazi occupation and the story of Operation Anthropoid, the mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, and the retaliatory massacre at Lidice. In Terezín, uncover the realities of the ghetto for Czech Jews at Theresienstadt, infamously deemed a “model” concentration camp through deceptive propaganda disseminated by the Nazis.
Continue into Germany to explore Colditz Castle, the Renaissance hilltop fortress that was transformed into a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Visit the “Florence on the Elbe” during a walking tour in Dresden, known for its remarkable postwar reconstruction. The tour culminates in Torgau, where American and Soviet forces linked up on the Elbe in April 1945. Conclude in Berlin with visits to pivotal sites including Treptower Park and Karlshorst. This powerful journey offers a deeper understanding of the events, decisions, and human experiences that shaped the end of the war in Europe.
