WHAT IS THE SUMMER TEACHER SEMINAR?
The National WWII Museum’s Summer Teacher Seminar is an immersive teacher professional development programming experience. Designed for middle school and high school teachers, these weeklong seminars offer thematic deep dives into a variety of topics on the history of World War II. Employing a rich array of curriculum built upon primary source materials, these seminars will aid teachers to find new and exciting ways to bring the war to life in the classroom. Each seminar will give teachers access to noted WWII scholars, as well as hands-on experiences and virtual resources they can incorporate into classroom instruction. Participants who complete the program will become part of the Museum’s nationwide network of teachers dedicated to improving the quality of instruction on World War II.
Who Can Participate?
The Summer Teacher Seminars are open to any teachers at an accredited public, charter, private, or parochial school who have at least two years of classroom teaching experience and who will be teaching during the 2021–2022 school year. Teachers of subjects other than social studies may apply, but should explain in their application how they plan to incorporate WWII themes into their curriculum. Media specialists, librarians, curriculum coordinators, and academic coaches are also eligible provided they spend at least half of their time providing direct instruction to students. Applications include information on teaching experience, two short written statements, and two letters of recommendation. All applications received within the submission window will receive fair assessment. The Museum seeks to recruit a diverse cohort of 30 teachers for each seminar. Teachers accepted to attend the Summer Teacher Seminars will be expected to give at least one teacher professional development workshop featuring the Museum’s curriculum in the year following completion of the program.
There is no cost. Participants will receive free lodging, a travel stipend, seminar materials, and most meals free of charge.
Voices from the Pacific War: Teaching the Untold Stories of World War II
During Voices from the Pacific War, educators will receive an in-depth weeklong seminar on topics related to the Pacific Theater in World War II. Altogether, the Asia-Pacific War cost about 25 million lives. Out of this number, about 6 million were combatants, 19 million were civilians. These numbers and the true cost and consequences of the Pacific War can be difficult for students to fully understand. Within the Pacific War are millions of stories, some well-known, others too often passed over, that can help students deepen their understanding of the impact and legacy of the Pacific War. From American Marines fighting on Iwo Jima to American women service members to Japanese American internees, this seminar will highlight the many stories included in the museum’s collections and curriculum. Learning from historians, educators, and museum staff, teachers will gain a better understanding of the war in the Pacific and the best strategies to use museum resources to teach about the Pacific theater.

The Power of Propaganda: Teaching Media Literacy Through World War II
Designed as an interdisciplinary professional development for English Language Arts teachers, media library specialists, and Social Studies teachers, The Power of Propaganda provides educators with an in-depth, week-long seminar on teaching media literacy through the analysis of World War II propaganda. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum defines propaganda as biased information created to shape public opinion and behavior. Throughout World War II, Allied and Axis nations developed propaganda to solidify support for their governments and for the war effort and distributed this propaganda through many different mediums including posters, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, movies, and even comic books. Incorporating propaganda in the classroom, then, requires educators to not only teach the historical context of propaganda, but to teach students the skills to critically analyze different forms of media and primary sources. Learning from historians, educators, and museum staff, teachers will gain effective teaching strategies to help students analyze World War II propaganda, evaluate primary sources, and cultivate media literacy.
