Knit Your Bit

Since its launch in 2006, Knit Your Bit has reached more than 10,000 knitters and crocheters in all 50 states. Through their efforts, the Museum has distributed more than 50,000 scarves to veterans’ centers, hospitals, and service organizations across the country.

How to Participate

  • Hand knit or crochets a scarf measuring no smaller than 6" x 60". Some patterns may call for variations on measurements. Please no key-hole or potato chip scarves.
  • Use yarn that is machine washable and dryable in gender neutral or patriotic colors. We recommend staying away from fun fur or eyelash yarn.
  • Sew in all loose ends.
  • Print out the Knit Your Bit label linked here. Each scarf will need a tag. We recommend printing on cardstock since it is sturdier for distribution. Under “Compliments Of,” we recommend using your first name only and perhaps the city and state you live in for security reasons. Feel free to write a personal message on the back of the tag!
  • To attach the tag to the scarf, we recommend punching a hole at the top and using either a piece of yarn or a safety pin.
  • When you are ready to distribute your scarf to a veteran, we recommend reaching out to the following groups in your community who may be interested: veteran hospitals, veteran retirement homes, veteran service organizations, nonprofit organizations that support unhoused people including veterans, American Legions, VFWs, and more. Operation Gratitude is another organization that supports our military and veterans and also accepts knitted scarves for distribution.
