How to Participate
- Hand knit or crochet a scarf measuring 4" - 5" wide and 48" - 50" long.
- Ideally, use size 4 worsted weight yarn, and not bulky yarn, that is also machine washable and dryable.
- Sew in all loose ends.
- Print out the Knit Your Bit label linked here. Each scarf will need a tag. We recommend printing on cardstock since it is sturdier for distribution. Under “Compliments Of,” we recommend using your first name only and perhaps the city and state you live in for security reasons. Feel free to write a personal message on the back of the tag!
- To attach the tag to the scarf, we recommend punching a hole at the top and using either a piece of yarn or a safety pin.
- When you are ready to distribute your scarf to a veteran, we recommend reaching out to the following groups in your community who may be interested: veteran hospitals, veteran retirement homes, veteran service organizations, nonprofit organizations that support unhoused people including veterans, American Legions, VFWs, and more. Operation Gratitude is another organization that supports our military and veterans and also accepts knitted scarves for distribution. - Feel free to email pictures of scarves and distributing them to veterans to public.engagement@nationalww2museum.org.
