Join The National WWII Museum for a free student webinar in honor of Black History Month to learn more about the 1944 Port Chicago disaster.
On July 17, 1944, thousands of tons of munitions being loaded by Black sailors onto a cargo vessel bound for the Pacific theater detonated, causing a cataclysmic explosion at a naval base in Port Chicago, California, that killed 320 people and injured nearly 400 others. During this webinar, students will learn more about the disaster, its aftermath, and the fight for justice spurred by the incident. The webinar will highlight the story of the Port Chicago 50, a group of African American sailors who were charged with mutiny after refusing to return to work under the unsafe conditions.
