A conversation with William Sturkey, PhD, and Jason Dawsey, PhD

Join us for an engaging discussion about African Americans’ contributions on the Home Front and how they helped lay the groundwork for the post-war Civil Rights Movement.

The service and sacrifice of African Americans in combat in World War II has become a better-known subject in the past couple of decades. So, too, has the story of the American Home Front in World War II. But the merger of the two—the African American Home Front experience—is not as well known. Dr. William Sturkey, in conversation with the Museum’s own Dr. Jason Dawsey, will discuss these wartime Home Front experiences and how they influenced the post-war Civil Rights Movement.

William Sturkey, PhD, is an associate professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he teaches courses on Modern American History, Southern History, the Civil Rights Movement, and the History of America in the 1960s. His most recent book, Hattiesburg: An American City in Black and White, is a biracial history of Southern Jim Crow that was published by Harvard University Press in March of 2019. Dr. Sturkey is currently writing a biography of the legendary Vietnam War hero Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez.

Jason Dawsey, PhD, is the Research Historian at The National WWII Museum’s Institute for the Study of War and Democracy.
