In 1942, the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard opened their ranks to most women. Though the three services were all under the Department of the Navy, each branch incorporated women reservists in a unique way. Despite more stringent enlistment requirements put on women compared to their male counterparts, by the end of the war, more than 115,000 women had joined the WAVES, SPARS, and Women Reservists.
