In 1946, Pfc. Sadao Munemori became the first Japanese American awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on the Gothic Line during World War II.

German troops invading France in the spring of 1940 committed widespread atrocities, especially against Black African colonial troops. One of the worst massacres took place at the town of Chasselay on June 20.

In the bloodiest of battles in Marine Corps history, 27 Marines and sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor for action on Iwo Jima. No other campaign surpassed that number.

The African American 614th Tank Destroyer Battalion earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its heroic stand in France in December 1944, and a Medal of Honor in 1997 posthumously awarded to Major Charles Thomas.
