Join us on June 14 as the Society of the Daughters of American Colonists honor K-9 war hero Layka for her bravery and service. Layka, a Belgian Malinois, is credited with saving the life of her handler, US Army Ranger Julian McDonald, and those of his teammates during a gunfight with an enemy combatant in Afghanistan in 2012. Layka sustained four point-blank shots during the skirmish and as a result had one of her front legs amputated. She’s been living with McDonald, himself a Purple Heart recipient, and his family in Navarre, Florida, since leaving military service.
