In November of 1945, an American WAC, Captain Kathleen Nash, found a trove of treasure hidden in the basement of a German castle—highly valuable jewelry, bibles, and other heirlooms belonging to part of the royal family of Hesse. Instead of taking these priceless pieces into safekeeping, Nash and two fellow officers sold off jewels and sent other items home to family. The trio was certain that in the aftermath of the war no one would notice, and no one did—until a European princess began asking for her jewels. Research Historian Kali Martin will delve into a little-known postwar scandal that shocked America: the Hesse Jewel Heist.
