Visitors at The National World War II Museum heard from Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of Hitler’s Winter: The German Battle of the Bulge, which offers a fresh perspective on one of the most famous battles of World War II through new research, and Churchill Cold War Warrior: Winston Churchill and the Iron Curtain, which examines how the end of World War II influenced the Cold War.
In Hitler’s Winter, Tucker-Jones explores the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive in the West. Launched in the depths of winter, three German armies attacked through the Ardennes with the goal of splitting the Allied forces and capturing the port of Antwerp. The battle turned into a race against time and the elements that the Germans would ultimately lose. Tucker-Jones tells the story from the German perspective, including the experiences of infantrymen and panzer crews, as well as the strategic decisions of senior commanders such as SS-Oberst-Gruppenführer Josef "Sepp" Dietrich and General Hasso von Manteuffel.
In Churchill Cold War Warrior, Tucker-Jones reassesses Winston Churchill’s postwar career, from his fears of shifting alliances in 1945 to his famous 1946 “Iron Curtain” speech. The book explores Churchill’s strategies, decisions, and influence as he confronted the collapse of the British Empire and the escalating Cold War during his second term as prime minister in the 1950s.
