The Battle for Peleliu
Peleliu is a small island in the Palau archipelago located some 500 miles east of the Philippines. The “crab claw”-shaped island extends largely from south to north and is roughly seven square miles. History has argued that “the fight for Peleliu was one of the most vicious and stubbornly defended battles of the war.” Today, the island is a lush tropical landscape, with remnants of the battle waiting to be discovered by the few travelers who reach the island per year.
