Beyond commentary on the burgeoning Cold War, many of Eiji Tsuburaya’s and Ishiro Honda’s production decisions are meant to reflect the Japanese experience of World War II. 

It is often hard to determine the final shots of a major conflict, but in the case of the naval war against Japan, the USS Concord was sure to cement her legacy.

Takeshi Maeda, a Japanese Imperial Naval pilot, guided his bomber to Pearl Harbor and released a torpedo that helped sink the USS West Virginia. Years later, he became a leading figure in reconciliation efforts between Japan and the United States.
