The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Japanese American unit, is remembered today for its brave actions in World War II. Despite the odds, the 442nd’s actions distinguished them as the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US military.
Before becoming the most highly decorated unit for its size in the Army, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team trained at Camp Shelby in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Colonel Jimmie Kanaya, 442nd Regimental Combat Team medic, became a prisoner of war in Germany after his family had been put behind barbed wire at home in the States. He went on to be a decorated three-war veteran and friend of The National WWII Museum who passed away November 7, 2019.

S. Neil Fujita was an American citizen born to parents of Japanese American ancestry. Like more than 120,000 other Japanese Americans, Fujita and his family were forcibly relocated and incarcerated during World War II.
