Carmen Miranda rose to stardom as a samba performer in her native Brazil in the 1930s. Her talent and vitality quickly made her a media sensation in the United States in the 1940s, especially as President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Good Neighbor policy looked to strengthen ties with Latin America. During the war years, Miranda starred in over a dozen films—becoming one of the highest-paid women in the country by 1945 and a symbol of intercontinental culture. Credited with bringing Brazilian music to audiences worldwide, Miranda’s legacy as a singer, actress, and dancer endures.
