The National WWII Museum Offers New History & Heritage Travel Package

Brings together the Best of the Museum and New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (August 16, 2012) — A new package offered by The National WWII Museum in New Orleans will provide travelers with an opportunity to simultaneously experience the rich historical experiences offered by both the Museum and the iconic city in which it lives. The "History and Heritage" travel package will offer a look at the culture and history of New Orleans coupled with an insider's tour of The National WWII Museum.

Offered on a monthly basis, the package presents an opportunity for travelers to spend a long weekend behind-the-scenes at The National WWII Museum with curators, while also touring various points of interest throughout the city of New Orleans.

"New Orleans' architecture-rich neighborhoods, stunning array of restaurants, vibrant music scene and major contributions to American history — as the site of the Louisiana Purchase land transfer and victory over the British during the War of 1812 — has made it a favorite destination for generations," said Dr. Gordon H. "Nick" Mueller, the Museum's president and chief executive officer. "The National WWII Museum also highlights the city's major role during WWII, as the site of Higgins Industries plants that built thousands of landing craft for Allied invasions in Normandy and elsewhere."

Some highlights of the itinerary include touring the galleries of the Museum and the John F. Kushner Restoration Pavilion and the 4-D cinematic experience Beyond All Boundaries. Guests also will dine at the American Sector, a celebrated restaurant overseen by acclaimed Chef John Besh, and will view original and top-rated entertainment at the Stage Door Canteen. Outside of the Museum, visitors will experience a guided tour of the city highlighting its vast architectural treasures, an afternoon cruise on the Mississippi River aboard the Steamboat Natchez and shopping and sight-seeing throughout the famous French Quarter. Travelers also will have time to explore both the Museum and the city on their own.

"Bringing together this insiders' look at The National WWII Museum and the city it calls home makes for a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers," Mueller continued. "Indeed, marketing surveys indicate that for many tourists The National WWII Museum is a primary reason for their trip to New Orleans. The American Automobile Association’s summer 2012 issue of Southern Traveler magazine, based on a reader poll, ranks the Museum as the best regional attraction — and, for the third year in a row, ranks New Orleans as the South's best large city for a weekend getaway."

Tours are currently scheduled through June of 2013 with dates including October 4 – 7, November 8 – 11, December 3 – 6, January 10 – 13, February 21 – 24, March 21 – 24, April 4 – 7, May 9 – 12 and June 13 – 16. The National WWII Museum tells the story of the American Experience in the war that changed the world — why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. Dedicated in 2000 as The National D-Day Museum and designated by Congress as America’s National WWII Museum, it celebrates the American Spirit, the teamwork, optimism, courage and sacrifice of the men and women who fought on the battlefront and the Home Front.
