During the Holocaust, as many people starved, women imprisoned in ghettos and concentration camps began to write down traditional and family recipes. Hungry and longing for a world in which their families were together again in their homes, these women reminisced through food, sharing recipes with one another and forming new communities. On scraps of paper and the backs of munitions forms, the recipes they wrote preserved a key part of European Jewish culture as the Nazis tried to destroy it. Join historian Jennifer Putnam, PhD, as she shares the stories and recipes of Mina Pächter, Ilona Kellner, and other brave women who resisted the Nazi regime to save their heritage from destruction. This event is a celebration of their bravery and a memorial to their lives as we approach the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27.
