Harper Professor Emeritus of German and European History and the College at the University of Chicago. He is the co-author or co-editor of Resistance against the Third Reich, 1933-1990 (1994); Shattered Past: Reconstructing German Histories (2003); Beyond Totalitarianism: Stalinism and Nazism Compared (2009); The Cambridge History of the Second World War, Vol. 3; Total War: Economy, Society, and Culture (2015); as well as numerous articles and book chapters on World War I, the Wehrmacht, and the Nazi regime.
