The National WWII Museum Named No. 3 Museum in the United States in 2015 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards

NEW ORLEANS (September 16, 2015) — The National WWII Museum today announced it has been recognized as a winner in the 2015 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice™ awards for museums, ranking No. 3 in the nation—up from No. 4 last year. Other winners include The Metropolitan Museum of Art (No.1), Art Institute of Chicago (No.2), The Getty Center (No.4) and Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (No.5).

TripAdvisor has highlighted the world’s most popular museums based on the quantity and quality of consumer ratings gathered over a 12-month period. “We are honored to be recognized by TripAdvisor and all the travelers who visit our Museum from near and far,” said Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller, PhD, president and chief executive officer of The National WWII Museum. “The award shows that our visitors share the love we have for this great institution, and they also share our passion for telling the story of those who served and sacrificed.”

The Museum remains the No. 1 attraction in New Orleans for the third consecutive year. Other top attractions in New Orleans include St. Louis Cathedral, Frenchmen Street and New Orleans City Park.

“Honoring nearly 600 institutions worldwide, the Travelers’ Choice awards have recognized the favorite museums that serve as cultural treasure troves for our community of millions,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “These world-class museums provide an enriching experience that can be both inspiring and educational for travelers around the globe.”

The National WWII Museum reached several milestones this year – including celebrating its 15th anniversary in June – and expansion continues at the institution’s six-acre campus in New Orleans. The newest exhibition hall, Road to Tokyo: Pacific Theater Galleries, is slated to open in December, retracing American forces’ tumultuous journey from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay. Galleries will explore the evolving strategy for fighting relentless Japanese forces as they examine cultural differences, logistical challenges and the staggering range of extreme environmental conditions that confronted American military forces in Asia and the Pacific. A series of private and public Grand Opening events will be announced later this fall.
