ANNEX

To add territory to a state or country, often through the threat of use of military force.

BLACK MARKET

Activity that involves the illegal buying and selling of goods in violation of price controls or rationing.

BLACKOUT

Extinguishing or concealing all visible lights as a precaution against an air raid.

BONDS

Government certificates promising to pay the buyer a certain amount of money after a certain amount of time. Bonds issued during World War II helped finance the war effort.

CIVILIAN DEFENSE

Organized, non-military authorities in charge of protecting citizens on the Home Front from military attacks or natural disasters.

DEPLOY

The movement of troops into a theater of operations for military action.

DUE PROCESS

Fair treatment of all citizens through standard judicial procedures.

EVACUATE

To remove from an area of perceived danger to an area of greater safety.

EXECUTIVE ORDER

Instructions, having the force of law, issued by the President of the United States to the military or to another part of the executive branch.

EXPANSIONISM

Government policy of taking steps to help grow a country’s territory or influence.

INCARCERATION

Confining a person or persons in a prison, camp, or other space.

INTERVENTIONISM

Government policy favoring involvement in the affairs of another country or a foreign conflict.

ISOLATIONISM

Government policy favoring non-involvement in the affairs of other countries or foreign conflicts.

LIBERTY SHIP

A large cargo ship built rapidly and in large numbers for the US Merchant Marine during World War II.

LOBBY

To try to influence someone’s actions, especially those of a public official.

LOGISTICS

The business of acquiring, maintaining, transporting, and housing people, equipment, and supplies.

LUFTWAFFE

The German Air Force during the WWII era.

NEUTRALITY

Status of a country that takes no side in a conflict between other countries.

PROPAGANDA

Information, often biased or misleading, that promotes or publicizes a particular idea or point of view.

PROTOTYPE

The initial model of a product, from which other forms are developed or copied.

RATIONING

The controlled distribution and monitored consumption or use of scarce goods and commodities during wartime.

SABOTAGE

To deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct something, especially for military or political advantage.

SYNTHETIC

Something made by humans rather than occurring naturally.

TACTICAL

Relating to the specific actions planned to achieve a military objective.
