Go Behind the Lines at The National World War II Museum

The National World War II Museum is proud to announce a new VIP experience, the Behind the Lines Tour.  Never before offered to the public, this is a rare opportunity to visit the Museum’s vault and large artifact storage areas with a Museum Curator as your guide.  Like most museums The National World War II Museum has less than 10% of its collection on current exhibit.  Although visitors will still not see every item in the Museum’s collection on this tour they will see a large number of artifacts, including several special items earmarked for inclusion in the Museum’s upcoming expansion.

The 2 ½ hour personal tour includes a look inside the Museum’s Sherman tank, an examination of artifacts in the Museum’s vault and a visit to the large artifacts storage area, all conducted by a Museum Curator.

Booking a tour:
Book your Behind the Lines Tour now by calling 504-528-1944 x 222 or emailing group.sales@nationalww2museum.org. Gift certificates are also available.

When you arrive:

Behind the Lines Tour ticket holders should report to the Ticket window where they will meet their guide.  The tour begins with an inspection of the large artifacts exhibited in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion and an opportunity to explore the inside of the Sherman Tank.  Your guide will take a digital image of the group with the Sherman tank and e-mail this to you.

The tour then continues in the collections vault.  With over 67,000 artifacts, The National World War II Museum, like most museums, has only a small part of its collections on exhibit at any one time.  Those not on exhibit are carefully stored for use in future exhibits and research.  The vault tour will provide visitors with an opportunity to see some of these artifacts.  The tour will include items from archival, photographic, insignia, uniforms, knives and daggers, weapons and general collections.  Visitors will be provided with white gloves so they may handle selected artifacts.

Your tour continues in the large artifact storage area. Many of these items are being prepared for inclusion in the Museum's expanded exhibit galleries. Among the large artifacts in storage are the bulk of the Museum's artillery collection, the vehicle collection, German staff cars and a rare German Acoustic Aircraft Locator.

When the Behind the Lines Tour is concluded, guests are encouraged to take a self-guided tour of the Museum’s permanent and special exhibits galleries.
