The Impact of Airplanes on My Life

There were a lot of inventions that came from WWII including radar, penicillin, computers and jet airplanes. The one that impacted my life the most has been jet airplanes. Airplanes have been around for a long time, but in WWII technology was developed that allowed the planes to fly for longer distances, faster, higher and use less fuel. This was the start of the commercial airline business.

My father is in the Air Force and both of my grandfathers are retired military. Because of my parents military life they didn’t live in one town their entire life. They didn’t have family close and didn’t get to see relatives on a regular basis. With my dad in the military I have never lived in the same state as any of my relatives. I have one set of grandparents in Nevada. My other grandparents have lived in California, New Mexico and Colorado since I’ve been born. My great grandparents live in Missouri. I have lived in North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and now England in the past 10 years.

The invention of jet airplanes has allowed me and my family to stay close. My grandparents have flown out to visit us 3 or 4 times a year. It doesn’t matter where we are stationed, they can still come and visit. Because of airplanes they have not missed a single one of mine or my sister’s birthdays. Every summer we fly back to Missouri to visit my great grandparents for the family reunion. Family members fly in from all over just so we can see each other once a year. Since flying takes so much less time than driving we have also been able to go visit Nevada during spring break or other school breaks. With only a week break, if we were to drive from Montana to Nevada the majority of the time would be wasted on driving.

In November we moved to England. It took my mom, sister and I 5 different airplanes to get from Los Angeles to here in 24 hours. That is something that would not have been possible without airplanes. We now have the chance to visit a different country and see all sorts of really interesting things in the next 3 years. My grandparents are going to fly over this summer to visit us and we are going to fly back next summer to the family reunion. Without airplanes it would be 3 years before we got to see our family.

Although there were a lot of inventions that came out of WWII the one that has impacted my life the most was the jet airplane. Airplanes have been very important in keeping my family close and allowing us to visit family as well as other countries.
