Because I've done a lot of reading about this war 00:06:15.650 --> 00:06:17.860 I had heard of code talkers before 00:06:17.960 --> 00:06:21.630 but there was so much I learned from Chester Nez's story. 00:06:21.890 --> 00:06:24.300 For instance, I had never realized 00:06:24.430 --> 00:06:29.230 that many young Navajo children like six, seven, eight years old 00:06:29.400 --> 00:06:33.370 were taken away from their families in the 1920s and 30s 00:06:33.440 --> 00:06:37.410 and beyond and they were sent away to residential boarding schools. 00:06:37.710 --> 00:06:39.640 When they got to these schools 00:06:39.750 --> 00:06:44.480 for example, the boys who in their culture were supposed to wear their hair long 00:06:44.680 --> 00:06:47.090 they were forced to have their hair cut short 00:06:47.320 --> 00:06:50.590 and they were forced to dress in clothing that was unfamiliar to them. 00:06:50.960 --> 00:06:55.090 In addition, when they got to these schools 00:06:55.190 --> allowed back 00:07:55.020 --> 00:07:58.220 to a smaller part of their homeland now a reservation 00:07:58.360 --> 00:08:02.330 they began to raise sheep to try to support themselves, sheep and goat. the wool from their goats and sheep. 00:08:12.500 --> 00:08:17.410 Well, after a few years of having a lot of sheep 00:08:17.540 --> 00:08:21.880 the government decided that they had too many sheep experiences. 00:08:39.200 --> 00:08:46.940 It was a shock to me to learn that after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 00:08:47.170 --> 00:08:49.510 along with thousands of other young men 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:56.050 thousands of Navajo young men also enlisted in the Marines and in the army. 00:08:56.280 --> 00:08:58.120 It was hard for me to understand 00:08:58.280 --> 00:09:02.920 how they could be that self-sacrificing to do that for a country 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:07.230 that really hadn't cared for them or supported them, but they did enlist. 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:11.300 There was a sergeant, not a Navajo 00:09:11.400 --> 00:09:16.230 his name is Phillip Johnston and he had grown up on the Navajo reservation 00:09:16.330 --> 00:09:18.540 and even though he lived there his whole life 00:09:18.640 --> 00:09:21.140 he could only speak a few words of Navajo 00:09:21.240 --> 00:09:24.410 because it's such a difficult language to speak and to learn. 00:09:24.540 -->
