live in infamy.” Words and a date remembered as the defining
moment in history that prompted the United States to declare war
on Japan. The next day, the U.S. officially entered into World
War II. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor lasted a brief 90
minutes but inflicted immeasurable damage. 2,403 Americans died
that day nearly half of the American fatalities – 1,102 men –
were caused by the explosion and sinking of the USS Arizona. The
Pearl Harbor attack galvanized a divided nation into action.
Overnight, Americans united against Japan.
