Mars Taskforce Photographic Exhibit
On Display: January 27, 2005 -February 27, 2005

Location:
1st Floor, Louisiana Memorial Pavilion
Often overlooked but critical to the ultimate plan of victory in the Second World War, the China Burma India was always last on the list for everything. When it came to supplying the theater with fighting units, being last on the list meant local commanders had to improvise units. In February 1944, a special unit was formed to combat the Japanese in Burma.

This unit, certainly not last on the list when it came to courage and daring, was known by the nickname “Merrill’s Marauders”. After 7 months of combat, the unit was used up. The remains of the Marauders were reformed into the MARS Task Force.

This unit, which served from August 1944 to February 1945, will be examined through an exhibit of artifacts and photographs from the members of this unit. Many of these photographs were taken by individuals and have never been published or exhibited and have not been seen since the war. Join us as we explore the history of these unsung heroes of Burma.
