Introduction

World War II did not stop the celebration of Christmas on the American Home Front. Across the country Americans adapted to the changes brought by war, including gasoline, sugar and liquor rationing, margarine rather than butter, toys made of cardboard rather than metal, and the separation of friends and families as the demands of a global war altered the pre war traditions. But the celebration, both religious and secular, continued until peace returned again in 1946.
