Lunchbox Lecture: Country Music and World War II

This lecture by Kevin Fontenot shows how country music reflected Southern people's attitudes toward the war, ranging from patriotic songs to ballads dealing with the loss of loved ones. Fontenot also discusses the military careers of artists such as Gene Autry, Grandpa Jones and Hawkshaw Hawkins. The lecture is illustrated with photos, sheet music and musical examples, including "There's A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere," "At Mail Call Today" and selections from Carson Robison's anti-fascist and anti-Japanese songs. This lecture is free. Bring your lunch!

Fascinating stories abound in this panel discussion that includes Mary Lore, who sang in an all-girl review and talks about entertaining in a war zone; Frances Hoffman, a woman Marine who discusses working in Hawaii; Jeanette Solomon, a WAC who shares her stateside stories; and Delores Libby, a real-life Rosie the Riveter who went to California to work in the war effort.

Lunchbox Lecture: Appeasement as a Policy

This lecture provides a broad overview of appeasement as a policy, showing how appeasement represented a continuation of earlier British foreign policy. Presenter Dr. George Bernstein, of Tulane University, focuses on the domestic and foreign-policy factors that constrained British policy toward Germany, in particular, in the 1930s. He also evaluates the major crises of the 1930s to try to see when, even given the constraints, Britain (or France) should have acted.

World War II-era theatrical cartoons – think Looney Tunes, Popeye – were made for both propaganda and entertainment purposes. Examples are shown all day on a large screen in the Orientation Center.

Living History Corps 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The Museum’s World War II re-enactors enrich the visitor’s Museum experience with their wealth of information and stories. Wearing the uniforms and carrying the equipment of both the Allied and Axis forces, they share their knowledge about the day-to-day lives of military men and women and the broader lessons of World War II.

Lagniappe Lecture: World War II on Stage and Screen 1:00 – 2:00 PM
From “South Pacific” to “Hogan’s Heroes,” this lecture focuses on how Hollywood, the world cinema, TV and Broadway have looked at World War II. Join Brian M. Hughes, co-host of WTUL 91.5-FM’s “Stage & Screen,” for this entertaining exploration.

Lagniappe Lecture: The Liberation of Paris 1:00 – 2:00 PM
Not many Parisians were asleep amid the cacophony of church bells in the early morning hours of August 25, 1944. The telephones were working, and everyone knew that Allied soldiers were in the suburbs. The bells of the churches could mean only one thing: The liberators had arrived.

Historical Miniatures Scenario 11 a.m. to 2 pm
"Vive Paris Libre!" Using 28mm figures, the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society recreate a war-game scenario from the dangerous and confusing days surrounding the Liberation of Paris. The public is invited to observe, learn and take part in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion.
