Computer Creations (that your students make themselves!)

Teachers, instead of creating tests and quizzes to check your students' WWII knowledge, why not let them create their own?  Here are some fun ways for students to show their creativity while exercising their research skills, as well as their technology skills.  You can use these student creations in the classroom and then email them to The National WWII Museum to share with students across the country. Educational Researcher Robert Marzano recommends using games as a way to increase student achievement.  He says:

Over the last five years, I have had the opportunity to examine the influence of academic games in a variety of classes and subject areas.  These studies showed that, on average, using academic games in the classroom is associated with a 20 percentile point gain in student achievement. This is a relatively strong finding...Teacher-conducted research indicates that games can have a significant effect on student achievement when teachers use them purposefully and thoughtfully. (Educational Leadership, February 2010)

Instructions for creating a WWII Jeopardy Game
(these instructions are also found on the first slide of the PowerPoint template)

  1. Choose the topic for your WWII Jeopardy Game (examples: the Home Front, D-Day, Aircraft Carriers, the Bataan Death March, Winston Churchill, etc.).  On slide 2 give your quiz a name.

  2. Research that topic using classroom resources, your library, the Internet, or other local resources like a museum or a veteran you know.

  3. Break your topic into four question subjects (example: for the Home Front, you could use Rationing, War Production, Scrapping, and Entertainment).

  4. Compose five questions for each subject (make sure that there is only one correct answer and that you know what it is).  You can choose to provide answers and require questions—like on the TV show Jeopardy—or you can provide questions and require answers.

  5. On Slide 3, type your categories in the Subject boxes.  You can change the font size and style if you desire.  Next type your questions and answers on each slide from Slides 4-13.  Make sure you put the right question/answer on the right slide.  You can insert images, if you wish.

  6. You can add colors to your quiz.  Double click each box and choose the fill color or line color that you want.  Make sure any text is still readable.  To change the background color of slides, right click, choose Background, and click the drop down arrow to pick your color.
