The National World War II Museum, formerly known as The National World War II Museum, was founded by the late historian Stephen E. Ambrose in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 6, 2000. The Museum was designated by Congress as “America’s National World War II Museum” in September 2003. Its mission is to preserve and promote the values of the American Spirit – the teamwork, optimism, courage and sacrifice of the men and women who won WWII – and encourage the exploration and expression of these values by future generations.

The American Spirit Award

The American Spirit Award recognizes an individual who best exemplifies the outstanding qualities of the American Spirit, including teamwork, optimism, courage and sacrifice – and who promotes the exploration and expression of these values through their own life and actions. Awarded by the Trustees of The National World War II Museum, the American Spirit Award is the Museum’s highest honor. It is given, not on an annual basis, but only as recipients are identified who meet the criteria for the award in a unique and meaningful manner.

Secretary George P. Shultz is being honored with the award in acknowledgement of his lifetime of remarkable service as a young Marine in the South Pacific during World War II and as an educator, business leader and four-time Cabinet officer, culminating in his public service as Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of State.
