What lessons can we learn from WWII to help us overcome
today’s challenges?
After reading 500 essays from 48 states, two US territories,
and one foreign US military base, the 2006 Student
On-Line Essay Contest judges have chosen the winners.
The decision was difficult because there were many
fine essays submitted. Numerous essays contained thorough
synopses or chronologies of WWII. Others sought parallels
between WWII and today’s war in Iraq and Hurricane
Katrina. Still others searched history for lessons
of personal growth, fulfillment, and service. In the
end, the judges looked for good writing, clarity,
creativity, and originality to set the winners apart
from the rest of the pack. These essays provide a
glimpse at the talent, mentality, and enthusiasm of
the generation that will carry on the lessons of World
War II.
