Tom Hanks, Honorary Chairman, National Capital
Campaign |
February 4, 2004.
Hundreds of friends
and supporters of The National D-Day Museum gathered
for a gala event at The National Building Museum
in Washington, D.C. to announce the Museum's $150,000,000
Capital Campaign. The event, Salute to the
Citizen Soldier, provided a chance for the
Museum to officially thank the US Congress for
designation as "America's National World
War II Museum" by honoring the thirteen Senators
and Representatives currently serving who are
World War II veterans or Holocaust Survivors.
Two of those honored, Senators
Ted Stevens and Daniel Inouye, served as co-chairs
of the event. They were joined onstage by actor
Tom Hanks, Honorary Chair for the National Capital
Campaign, and newswoman Cokie Roberts as Mistress
of Ceremonies. Corporate sponsors included Northrop
Grumman Corp., Science Applications International
Corp., Entergy Corp., Frantzen/Voelker Investments,
Maersk Inc. and BellSouth telecommunications,
among others.
Tom Hanks spoke passionately
about the vision of the Museum and its founder,
the late Historian Dr. Stephen Ambrose, who exalted
the role of the ordinary men and women in World
War II and coined the phrase "Citizen Soldier"
to describe them.
Thanks to our generous
corporate sponsors, the Congressional Host Committee
and all who attended, the event was a huge success
and a great launching of our exciting Capital
Campaign. For more information on contributing
